20 Trailblazers Leading The Way In Toto Asia
The Band Toto Asia
Toto was expanding production facilities abroad, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People’s Republic of China. North America was seen as an opportunity to grow for Washlet toilets and bidet seats, in contrast to its “base” markets in Japan and China.
Dhaniram Toto documented Toto words so that the next generation could understand the words. However, many words were being replaced with foreign words, such as dui from Bengali for verandah.
Origins
Toto’s early history which began in 1917, mirrored Japan’s rapid economic expansion. In the first half of 1917, Toto made goods to meet the demand for modern, brand new urban housing. It used the first tunnel kiln in the country to produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered automation to allow production control, which helps to increase efficiency and consistency.
The company began expanding overseas in the late 1980s in order to benefit from new markets and sales opportunities. The company created the Cera Trading Company to import and market other products of other manufacturers in order to expand its line of sanitary earthenwares as well as plumbing fittings. This strategy helped to increase sales and expand the market share of the company globally.
In the 90s, Toto began to concentrate on research and development for water-related appliances. It also improved its system of distribution to better serve its customers and increase profit. The company used the same just-in-time approach to its supply chain management as well as sales program. This resulted in a higher level of satisfaction of customers.

Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro, and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all performed on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also appeared on records by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
You might expect a band with a name such as Asia to be a prog rock band however, it’s actually a relatively straightforward rock band. The group began as a quartet and recorded two albums – 1979’s self titled debut, and 1980’s Armed to the Teeth. The group has a wide musical background, but their biggest success was in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a major blockbuster, however it did not come without its share of issues. Record companies put the band on position with the order “give us an album that is a success or we’ll sack you” and the pressure was on to give it. Luckily for Toto they did with the aid of the smash single “Africa.”
Toto’s musical mastery is the result of their previous experiences. Before joining the group, the members were session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their distinctive sound has become the standard for the ’80s, and has influenced many contemporary artists.
The album opens with a strong and pounding sound with songs like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write great AOR songs that slowly get their hooks into your. The album also features more jazzy, slower tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. And the album ends with Great Expectations, a song which combines folk and distorted AOR and sounds like a complete flop, but works wonderfully well.
After Toto IV, the band’s fortunes began to wane. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career and the band had several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band following drug-related charges. The band remained with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.
Despite the turmoil, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation, which was not as successful as IV. The group managed to release an album that was chart-topping, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was the first album featuring a new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up
Turn Back, the band’s third studio album is a return to a classic sextet structure and it was a more consistent, more powerful album with a sharper edge. The more edgy sound of the album reflected the maturation of the group and included drummer Bobby Kimball’s improved proficiency on the drums, as well as a more mature, confident vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich’s keyboard playing was also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to previous recordings.
After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live performance in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album just a few months after and embarked on a world tour support it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to discover songs that had never been recorded prior to. It was completed in 2001 as a duo album titled Then & Now. It was the first album in the band’s history that did not include a single song with the word “A” in its title. It also included one previously not released track, “Kari-Anne”.
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group’s fourth album, Old Is New was an uncommercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which affected his singing abilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar’s drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia, met in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be reformed. The group, which was missing Howe who was busy with Yes at the time, was renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also had a special guest appearance from singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
